    Retrospective
We started out as a graphic design firm specializing in branding, packaging and illustration. Over the years, we have created logos, album and book covers, toy and food packaging for lots of clients. Recently, we decided to return to our first love—illustration. Now we only do illustrations vs. being responsible for entire branding campaigns. Here are some of our favorite projects from over the years. We no longer do this kind of work, but it is still a big part of our history, and it influences how we illustrate today.

  • Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co.
    Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co.
    Product Branding

An artisan chocolate maker needed a brand identity for his new company. He wanted the brand to seem like it had been around forever. So we created a classic logo and designed a full line of packaging. It all went on to win several ADDY Awards and took Best of Show, prompting the Nashville Advertising Federation to name the designer 2010 Art Director of the Year.

  • The Doug Jeffords Co.
    The Doug Jeffords Co.
    Product Branding

A well-established family business hired us to re-tool their brand identity. Their reputation as true craftspeople making wonderful spice products was not reflected in their old logo & packaging. So we created a vintage-looking brand mark for the Doug Jeffords parent company along with compatible logos for the J.M. Thomason line of consumer spices.

    Big Book of Design series

Crescent Hill has been compiling design books for years and partnering with Harper Collins to publish them. They started a series that covered themes like: Self Promotion, Green Design, Business Cards, Layout and more. We were hired to establish a brand look for all new titles in the series, as well as re-design the old titles to fit the new look.

  • Old Glory
    Old Glory
    PRODUCT BRANDING
We were hired to design the logo and brand identity for a new Clarksville, TN distillery. We started with the American flag, or Old Glory, which symbolizes hardiness and valor, purity and vigilance, perseverance and justice. We then created a branding scheme that plays up eagles, stars and stripes, and a Southern gentleman’s nod to the Tennessee state flag.

  • Sno Cafe
    Sno Cafe
    PRODUCT BRANDING

Sno Cafe is a family owned business that brings a delicious twist to the traditional New Orleans style "SNOBALL."

We designed graphics for the Sno Cafe Truck that were reminiscent of the whimsy and playfulness of these delicious little icy snoballs.

  • True South Puzzle Co.
    True South Puzzle Co.
    Product Branding

A friend of ours wanted to start a new puzzle company called True South Puzzle Co. Other than being from the South, there was nothing special to set this brand apart from any other puzzle maker. So we created a branding strategy that would give our client a distinct edge: Support the local arts by featuring designs created by Southern artists. We offered 6 of our own designs to start off!

  • Fat Bottom Brewing
    Fat Bottom Brewing
    Product Branding

This new beer brewing company based in Nashville, TN needed a brand image as round and full as the beer they make. So we created a vintage-looking logo featuring a brew babe inspired by classic WWII air plane nose art.

  • Fat Botom Flavor Logos

There is nothing cooler than seeing your logo in-use on a product. We knew we had succeeded when we realized that our logo looked perfect on any shade of beer (which we gladly consumed after this photo was taken!)

  • Music City Pizza
    Music City Pizza
    PIZZA DELIVERY BOXES
We were asked to design delivery boxes for Music City Pizza. So we created some cool turn table art to make the top of the large box look like it could really pack the dance floor. In keeping with the Music City theme, we made the small pizza box for Music City Pizza look like a guitar amp (portable, yet powerful, loaded with cranked-up-to-eleven flavor!)

A tasty project came our way in the summer of 2013—and we could not wait to sink our teeth into it! The client wanted to renovate a popular Nashville performance venue called 12th & Porter and open a pizza restaurant next to it. The Pizza restuarant would be called Music City Pizza, and the idea was to celebrate local bands & music with great beer & pizza.

  • Willa's Shortbread
    Willa's Shortbread

It all started with Grandma Willa baking traditional shortbread in her kitchen. Over 30 years later, Willa's Shortbread continues to carry on the tradtion of high-quality products made by hand in small batches, using family-guarded southern recipes. When we were given the opportunity to design their packaging, we decided to re-design their logo as well.

    COOKIE PACKAGING

For over 30 years, Willa's Shortbread has produced the finest shortbread cookies and cheese biscuits using traditional southern recipies and the most natural ingredients. The packaging was designed to stand on it's own, but also include space for a flavor. We designed each flavor seal with its own unique personality/flavor cues and color not only to stand out on store shelves, but to give the client felxibility to swap out flavors as they needed to.

  • Rahal Farms
    Rahal Farms
    PRODUCT BRANDING

This farm practices holistic, sustainable land stewardship, compassionate animal husbandry, and educational community outreach in order to produce healthful, delicious and ecologically sound food. Our challenge in designing the logo was to create something that could work across a variety of platforms, from product packaging, to signage, to a future event space and teaching kitchen.

  • Rahal Farms
    Rahal Farms
    ORGANIC EGG PACKAGING

These eggs are the best you will ever eat. So the packaging had to be as good as the product inside—upscale, earthy, healthy, delicious, without being pretentious. We used colors, hand lettering, etched illustrations, and recycled paper to convey holistic farming, natural goodness, and artful attention to quality.

We get calls to help out with special
    packaging projects. In the summer
of 2013, our pals at WS asked us to
    help them create a special-edition
    15th Anniversary Peppermint Bark

    festive collector’s tin that paid
    homage to previous packages from
the last 15 years, while offering a

  • Ram Truck Wallscape
    Ram Truck Wallscape
The Richards Group (Ram Truck’s ad agency of record) hired us to create 2 poster designs that would be blown up HUGE to be hung on buildings in downtown Dallas. This design was made to promote the new new Ram Trucks that would be on display at the Texas State Fair. Fortunately, we did not have to create the art actual size!

  • Ram Truck Wallscape
    Ram Truck Wallscape
Chrysler wanted to promote their new line of Ram Trucks in Dallas using the same style of vintage illustration that we recently created for some State Parks poster art. So we came up with another big idea—big enough to cover the side of a building!

  • The Pharmacy
    The Pharmacy
A Restauranteur from East Nashville hired us to create the branding for a new Beer & Burger Garden with the look and feel of a Victorian-era pharmacy. We researched old hand-lettering and embellishments from that era to get inspired.

  • Legato Gelato
    Legato Gelato
    PRODUCT/STORE BRANDING

When Jamaican-born Terri-Ann Nicholls gave us a taste of her home-made gelato, we knew her brand would be a success! We proposed a clean, Italian look that played up the colors of a few of her more exotic flavors. The results were as visually delicious as her product!

  • The Wine Shoppe
    The Wine Shoppe
    COMPANY LOGO

We created this logo for a well-established wine and spirits store in Nashville, TN. The store’s new owners wanted to re-brand the old place with an emphasis on rare and imported wines. So we created a logo that feels like a classic European wine label.

    Rutledge Hill Press
    Blondie—A Complete History

We had the opportunity to design the cover and interior of a retrospective book that celebrates the Blondie cartoon strip. We were given access to original sketches, photos, and biographical info and given free reign on laying out the entire book. The result is truly a showpiece!

    Jeff Foxworthy’s Red Neck series

Our client did a book deal with Jeff Foxworthy. We had the good fortune to design all the covers and lay out the interiors of these hilarious books. We learned a bunch of new jokes in the process, like: “You might be a Red Neck if your family tree only has one branch.”

    Sweet Magnolia Ice Cream Co.
An artisan ice cream maker from Mississippi contacted us about creating a brand mark for his new business. It started with a great name (he considered several options before settling on Sweet Magnolia.) We sketched over 20 concepts before landing on a very nice logo. Here are a few of the sketches to show the range of ideas we explored.

  • Paper Monkeys
    Paper Monkeys
    T-SHIRT, POSTER & BOOKLET

A few years ago, some companies in New York and L.A. seemed to have negative impressions of designers from the South. So we did an experiment: we bought 2 cell phones—one with a N.Y. area code, and one with an L.A. area code. We created an alter ego called Paper Monkeys and never mentioned where we were from. When they saw our work, they invited us to meet, assuming that we were local designers. Once we met in person, we spilled the beans & got a good laugh.

  • Hunt Brothers Pizza
    Hunt Brothers Pizza
    BRAND IDENTITY

If we got a dollar for every time this logo appears, we’d be richer than Bill Gates! You may have seen this brand mark on gas station signs in small rural towns—it’s not our best work, but it is our most famous logo. Some folks think the man looks like Saddam Hussein. We actually did this logo during the Gulf War, so it’s possible that we were influenced by the media!

  • Farmers’ Market
    Farmers’ Market
    BRAND IDENTITY

The Nashville Farmers’ Market asked us to create a logo for them. So we hand-illustrated a classic, home-grown rustic logo with a timeless feel. Note the black and white logos—they were a few of the rough concepts that led to the final color logo.

  • Universal Music Group
    Universal Music Group
    BASEBALL CARD COLECTOR SET

When a record company hired us to help them promote their roster of artists, we started thinking about our old collections of baseball cards. Cards are fun to collect and trade. They have cool photos and interesting stats. Why not create collectible cards of the various artists on Universal Music Group’s roster? The project was a grand slam success.
  • Dreamworks Music
    Dreamworks Music
    BEER COASTER SET

Toby Keith needed to promote his new song “I Love This Bar.” DreamWorks Records hired us to create a promotional kit that could be mailed to radio stations and publicists. We produced a set of coasters with Toby’s photo on the back and a cool logo we developed on the front. The coasters became an immediate collectible item and even started selling on e-bay!

    LICENSING STYLE GUIDE

Universal Studios hired us to help them develop the style guide for Jurassic Park III. We flew to L.A., toured the studio, studied the story boards, and set to work creating dinosaur artwork that would appeal to boys ages 6 to 14. This style guide was sent all over the globe to licensees who used it to make everything from apparel and toys to school supplies and snacks.

Independent singer/songwriter Ben Shive hired us to design his CD package. He had seen the artwork of a 14 year-old artist that he wanted to use on his CD.
