    Personal Work
When we are not doing illustrations for clients or creating new poster art to sell on our site, we like to experiment. We push ourselves by trying out new techniques, different media, or funky themes. Some of these side projects lead to client work, personal commissions, or they just serve as a creative outlet. We have collected some of our favorite personal projects to showcase some alternative styles of artwork that we hope can be used in a future client project.

     FOUND OBJECT ART

Joel collects interesting objects and throws them into different boxes labeled Wood, Metal, Glass, Toys, Music, Dead Tech, Misc. or Funky. When he is tired of staring at a computer screen he likes to work with his hands and create Folk Art by combining found objects from his vast treasure trove. These two pieces celebrate Music City with discarded musical instruments and old records.

     FOUND OBJECT ART

Something is fishy about this work of art. After Anderson Design Group switched over their digital art archives from CDs and DVDs to hard drives, Joel gathered up all the old discs and turned them into scales to create this underwater scene.

    SCRATCHBOARD AND ACRYLIC

Joel loves to doodle. Often his doodles branch out into trees that have distinct human or emotional characteristics. The scratchboard titled "She Tree" was inspired by a redbud that reminded Joel of his wife. The acrylic "Growing Together" and the scatchboard version of the same idea were gifts to his wife on their 28th wedding anniversary. The adjoined trees symbolize the unity and intimacy that has come after growing together over the years.

    ACRYLIC & PASTEL

Joel's flat color paintings inspired him to pursue poster design. This diver painting employs the same bold color, negative space, iconic imagery and inventive composition as many of his poster designs. When Joel wants to loosen up, he enjoys using pastels. They offer a wide range of color, plus they are energetic, quick and convenient, since there are no brushes to clean!

    ACRYLIC & FOLK ART

Joel enjoys creating art with a bit of whimsical storyline. Are the birds in this acrylic painting mocking the cat, safely behind the bars of their cage, or has he already figured out how get inside? Does the dignified-looking gentleman made from discarded kitchen items speak French? He seems to have spent some time in Bordeaux!

    ACRYLIC

One advantage to being an artist is that you can decorate your own walls without having to go out and shop for art. During one rainy week at the beach in Destin, Florida, Joel painted this playful dolphin to brighten the walls of his daughter's room in the family beach cottage.

    DIGITAL PAINTINGS

Aaron likes to combine his love of medieval and renaissance things with his love of digital painting to produce cool fantasy art! All of Aaron's work is procuded 100% digitally, with a Wacom stylus. He loves to give his work a traditional feel and texture though, and paints using the same techniques an oil painter would use.

    CAT ART

When he isn't drawing knights and elves, Aaron likes to make cat art in a range of different styles. Always trying new things, Aaron isn't tied down to any one genre and paints anything from realistic portraits to whimsical cartoons.

    PILLOW DESIGNS

Aaron occasionally dabbles in product design and puts his work skills to use producing gifts for friends and family. Here he has created a pillow set for his mother-in-law depicting her cats.

    MANLY ART

This is from his Mega Macho Manly Men series, which he produced as a novelty gag calendar. Each illustration featured a different job being done to the extreme. Think Village People on steroids.

    LEFT-HANDED DRAWINGS

Drawing all the time doesn't come without hazards. When Aaron started to develop carpal tunnel he knew he had to do something to prevent it from worsening. So now he draws with his left hand every day on his Ipad and he can draw nearly as well as his right! He has amassed hundreds of drawings and treats it as an opportunity to draw whatever stikes his fancy after a long day of drawing for others.

    CONCEPT ART

Another of Aaron's passions lies in creating concept art. Concept art is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, comic books, or other media before it is put into the final product. It's where you get to experiment with characters and outfits and scenery and decide what works before you put it into your story.

    SCI-FI POSTERS

These “realized doodles” as Derek calls them, are the result of watching a lot of science fiction films and playing too many video games. These ideas often spawn in our heads while we watch tv/movies, read books, enjoy video games, etc. and most people just forget about them.

    SCI-FI POSTERS

Derek has taken to writing these little ideas down and then comes back to them when he feels the need to make something. Typically these ideas would be left rough, hidden inside a sketch book, but when taken to the next step can produce bold and interesting graphics.

    SCI-FI POSTERS

Derek has been inspired by numerous individuals and their creations. 2001: A Space Odyssey is his favorite film, and video game designer Hideo Kojima always seems to articulate the bizarre in a brilliant way, and that inspires Derek to come up with new ideas. Whenever Derek finds himself in a creative rut, he turns to these sources.

    POP ART

Derek made this “pop art” cyborg because of his interest in the technology, and theorizes how far it will go. The piece is based on a sketch he made with a caption reading “What do you mean there’s no more internet!?”. He is having fun with the idea that people invest everything into their tech, and there is a strong possibility that it could fail them and leave them hopeless.

    SKATE POSTERS

Derek started skateboarding at an early age and quickly learned the advantages of having a physical means of expressing his creative mind. To give back to the community that taught him so much, Derek produced this series of iconic “skate spots” from around the United States. From New York’s rich tapestry of surfaces and architecture to Venice Beach California’s warm and colorful beaches.
